A hotel made entirely from shipping containers is being pieced together next to EventCity .
Construction of the new 220 bedroom Holiday Inn Express is underway as it claims to be the first 'molecular' hotel in the north west.
It is also one of the first Holiday Inn Express in the UK to be built using this technique.
The purpose built steel shipping containers come complete with interior fixtures and fittings, full height windows, carpet, wallpaper, ceiling and light fittings - all of which are installed before being delivered to site.
Weighting around 20 tonnes each, the equivalent of eight Land Rovers, the containers are then individually stacked with all guest rooms being installed within a two to four week period.
An external finish is applied to the building once the modules are in place to create an attractive appearance.
Tower Hotel Management, part of the Peel Group, has been awarded the management contract to operate the chain hotel at TraffordCity.
Peter de la Perrelle, managing director of Tower Hotel Management, said: “It’s fantastic to see the hotel taking form so quickly thanks to this new approach to the design and build process, which essentially halves the duration of the build schedule.
"Tower Hotel Management is delighted to have been chosen to operate this new hotel and we are looking toward a May 2017 finish.”
Located on a 1.75 acre site next door to EventCity, the hotel will provide a stopover for leisure and business visitors and, with Peel’s own Tower Hotel Management leading operations.
Peter added: “In a prime location, Holiday Inn Express TraffordCity is ideally suited to serve the huge numbers of both leisure and business travellers visiting EventCity, intu Trafford Centre and the wider TraffordCity area.
"The planned arrival of the TfGM Metrolink line in several years’ time will only increase the hotel’s appeal.
“We’re looking forward to working directly with EventCity to offer streamlined services to visitors, and also with the Topland Group, joint funders of this hotel.”
The hotel group says it plans to meet the needs of today's smart traveller and it will include a new beverage concept.
It is planned to open June 2017.
